Located 12 miles west of Redding along Highway 299, this National Register Historic District preserves its Gold Rush heritage with false-front buildings, wooden sidewalks, and the legendary French Gulch Hotel. Once the largest gold-producing district in northern California, French Gulch today offers a unique blend of living history, Clear Creek recreation, and rural charm that is truly one of a kind.
French Gulch was founded in 1849 by French-Canadian miners and quickly became one of California's most productive gold-mining districts, producing over $30 million in gold. The Washington Mine, discovered in 1852, was the first quartz mine in Shasta County. The town served as a terminus for the western branch of the California Trail and was a major stagecoach stop from 1859 to 1868. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the 1,800-acre district preserves nine historic buildings including the French Gulch Hotel (1885) and Franck's Store.
